About the Artist

Sean Lofton holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of North Florida.

Technically, Lofton exhibits skillfulness in his choice of materials. The earthenware clay body is fired beyond it’s typical range creating additional glass formation in the clay matrix strengthening the piece. The surface is coated in ‘terra sigillata,’ a material perfected by ancient Romans who used it for its ability to seal an otherwise porous surface. Lofton uses it for similar reasons, adding pigments to adorn the surface while taking advantage of the matte texture inherent in the material. The scraped and scoured surfaces seem to ‘bleed’ with iron oxide naturally occurring from within the clay, reinforcing his “dystopian” concept.
